Bills bills bills… Money for your needs. Money for your wants. Oh, and money for those things you know you should be purchasing, but they’re not quite as fun as the “wants” list. Of course, this is a therapy blog. So, I’m going to have an opinion about where therapy falls on that list!
You have SO many options for therapy now
This time last year, the idea of online therapy was still relatively new to therapy users and therapists alike. Of course, there were people who have been doing online therapy for years, but not most of the world. So, we learned a ton about preparing your space, questions to ask your online therapist, who is online therapy best for, and more. Meanwhile, there has been discounted, online-only therapy options for folks who want to get a feel for what therapy can look like before finding a great, long-term fit. For women in Florida, your options have been opened up to allow you to find the perfect therapist wherever you are in the state. If you live in Pensacola but want to see someone in Orlando, you can! If you live in the panhandle, but find a Broward therapist you love, it’s easy to connect via online therapy in Florida!
So, how does mental health insurance and therapy investment fit in?
It used to be that when you decided to start therapy, you either called around to the people in your area or called your insurance company to find out who was covered. Maybe that’s still the prevailing strategy. However, now that you have more options for therapy than ever, finding the best therapist for you is key. Did you find someone amazing who matches your specific vibe? Excellent. That is probably where you should start! If they offer a free consultation, make an appointment to talk with them and see if you two click. Look into or ask about fees and payment options.
What does this have to do with the process of investing in therapy?
I want to help people understand the value of therapy. Of course, I cannot possibly express ALL of the benefits of therapy. But, I can help you figure out how to fully explore your options. Some therapists take insurance, while some do not. Like I said, the fit between you and your therapist is of utmost importance! You may be surprised by the rate, so I would recommend doing some research on current private, or self-pay therapy rates in your area so you have a solid idea of what to expect. Know your realistic budget going into the conversation, so you can make the best choice possible.
Out-of-Network Benefits for Mental Health Services: The Unsung Hero
Did you know, you can often use out-of-network insurance benefits, even if your therapist “doesn’t take insurance”? Mind. Blown. What an amazing way to have even more options for providers! Take a look at your policy, or call your insurance company to get more information so you are fully informed about the scope of your benefits and how to access them. Curious about how to ask your insurance company? I’ve made a list of the most common questions below.
Questions to ask insurance companies about using out-of-network benefits for therapy:
- Do I have out-of-network benefits? Separate deductible? How much?
- What percentage of therapy fees or cost does my out-of-network benefits cover?
- Does insurance require preauthorization for psychotherapy?
- Is a referral required to use out-of-network benefits for therapy?
- Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered in a policy year?
- What is the policy year?
Bonus question: What is courtesy billing, and who offers it?
We love this question! Here at Counseling Solutions of Broward, we offer courtesy billing. This just means that you pay upfront, and your therapist will arrange for your reimbursement payment using your out-of-network benefits. How great is that? It couldn’t be easier to get the high-quality, best fit therapy for YOU.
