Online therapy can seem super scary, which is why it is important to find an online therapist to you like and trust when you are ready to begin. The good news is that there are so many more options open to you for online therapy in Florida then there might be in person. You have options around the entire state instead of just in your local area. But, you may still have some questions.
For example in the state of Florida where I am, you might live up in the panhandle near Tallahassee, but find that you actually connect with a therapist down south, like me! (Yes. I’m currently taking new clients and would love to chat.) Maybe you are in Miami and someone from Central Florida near Orlando has special training you like. A therapist in St. Pete has training in an issue or therapy method you think makes good sense for you but you live in Fort Lauderdale.
Choosing an online therapist can feel overwhelming.
There are so many different possibilities now, and it can feel overwhelming to narrow it down. Plus, with COVID, we are all staring at computer screens all day. So, you want to make sure your online therapy session is actually going to keep your attention! I get it. I’ve had women from all over the state contact me for online therapy in Florida over the past 6+ months. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about “fit” and really appreciate it when clients ask questions during our initial online counseling consultation.
So, how do I find the best online therapist for me?
Finding a therapist is personal, but it is also technical. Now, more than ever! So, it is key to ask the questions about the technology aspect of online therapy.
Additionally, you have to make sure you can afford the services! I know a lot of people are searching for “free online therapy in Florida”, but that may not be the best option for high-quality care. The big, National therapy companies are convenient and affordable, but may or may not provide the individualized, personal attention you need or want to have in your corner.
Finally, you will need to do a “gut check” about the online therapist you are interviewing. Do you get the sense that they are there for you? That they genuinely care and have space for you? Not just in their schedule, but in their brain! Spoiler alert, therapists are people too. So, I like to encourage all who are looking for an online counselor in Florida to listen to what your body and brain are telling you about your new therapist. If it feels right, maybe their answers to some of the earlier questions won’t matter as much. But, the questions are all still valid to ask!
Questions to Ask Your Online Therapist in Florida
Here are a few of the specific questions that may be helpful to ask a new online therapist?
- Do you offer video, phone, text, etc?
- How much contact will I have with my online therapist? And, what is included?
- What can I expect our therapy sessions to be like?
- What is your cancellation policy?
- Will my insurance cover online therapy? If so, is it temporary?
- What are out-of-network benefits?
- What happens if we have tech issues during the session?
- Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
- I am experiencing anxiety, depression, a recent divorce, relationship issues…[insert your symptoms and concerns here]. Can you help me?
Is online therapy for me?
After all of that, the most important question you will ask through this process is the one you ask yourself. Is this online therapist the right fit for me? Line up your answers alongside your goals for this new relationship. If it feels right, then you know you are in the right place. If you’re not sure, then it might be smart to get a second opinion. Don’t hold yourself back by doing too much online therapist shopping, but do your research. Then, trust your gut and take that huge, important step to move forward with your choice. Online therapy in Florida might seem daunting at first, but I hope this list of questions will help you feel more confident about reaching out.
